Music teachers should encourage their pupils to learn the way pop musicians do, says a study from London University's Institute of Education.
Self-taught popular musicians learn to play, improvise and compose by copying recordings of music they like. They also watch and imitate other musicians, and are motivated by enjoyment rather than obligation, says Dr Lucy Green in How Popular Musicians Learn: A Way Ahead for Music Education. They may practice for hours at a time and often acquire virtuoso-like dexterity although they have never had a formal lesson. |
